Lot Essay

The armoured cruiser Duke of Edinburgh, named in honour of Queen Victoria's second son, was built at Pembroke Dockyard and completed for sea in January 1906. Displacing 13,550 tons, she measured 505½ feet in length with a 73½ foot beam, and carried a main armament of 6-9.2in. and 10-6in. guns. Capable of 23½ knots at full speed, she appeared more powerful than she was but nevertheless proved a useful addition to the fleet when first commissioned. The only cruiser of her squadron to emerge from the battle of Jutland unscathed, she also survived the Great War only to be scrapped in 1920.
