A Rare English Linen (?) Civil War Banner
Mid-17th Century
Of rectangular form, with a wide border (incomplete) now brown framing two rectangular panels each painted with the arms of Hopton of Herefordshire, gu. semy of crosses crosslet fitchy, a lion rampant, or. (damage throughout), covered with protective netting and enclosed within a double-sided glazed mahogany frame with suspension rings
Frame 37¾in. (95.9cm.) x 39½in. (100.3cm.)
According to family tradition, recorded on a brass label on the frame, the banner belonged originally to Sir Edward Hopton (1604-1668) of Canon Frome, M.P. for Hereford and Yeoman of the Stirrup to Charles I, who in 1634 was created a Knight Banneret by the King on the field of battle
