Lot Essay

The above lot is a detail after Henry Raeburn's diploma picture presented to the Royal Academy in 1816. Henry Raeburn Inglis was the son of Raeburn's elder step-daughter, Ann Leslie, and James Philip Inglis and the original work is particularly poignant as the boy was a deaf mute. The painting was to play an important part in the development of Raeburn's reputation.
