Lot Essay

The normal dovetailed block which carries the coarse focussing rack is split longitudinally, the body-tube being fixed to a second dovetailed slide within the first, which provides the fine adjustment. The screw for this is on the left hand side at the nosepiece end, marked Patent on the escutcheon, and is ungraduated. Despite its position, the adjustment affects the entire body-tube, not just the nosepiece. Swift moved to 81 Tottenham Court Road in 1881.
