FRANK RAYMOND LEAVIS (1895-1978)
A collection of 18 autograph letters signed ("F. R. Leavis"), to Ivar Watson Esq (Professor of English at Bibao University), approximately 36 pages, on 12 Bulstrode Gardens, Cambridge CB3 OEN headed paper and 2 airmail letters between 18 October 1971 and 12 April 1975.
Leavis corresponds with Watson with regard to his 2 visits to the Jesuit University of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain in 1972 and 1975. Deciding upon the subjects of the lectures for his first visit, he writes: "I think that at any rate one of my lectures should be on actual literature. I propose for title then: Swinburne, Eliot and Yeats: The Revolution in English Poetry in the 1920's" (18 October 1971) "I ought to confine myself in no. 2 to Eliot. Call it: T S Eliot's Importance" (10 November 1971). Expressing concern that his trip may be cancelled he describes "the abruptly publicized desperate uncertainty in which the country shivers. Authority told us that a complete lapse of electricity-supply might very well suddenly override us" (18 February 1972). He also mentions the content of his forthcoming book The Living Principle: "English as a Discipline of Thought" and discloses the name of his next book "Thought, Words and Creativity: The Lawrentian Genius" (9 February 1975) on which he is working.
