LORD ALFRED MILNER, 1ST VISCOUNT (1854-1925)
Four autograph letters signed ("Yours very truly A. Milner"), ("Yours very faithfully Alfred Milner"), or ("Yours very sincerely A Milner") to Robert W.A.Holmes Esq., together 15 pages, 8°, three on Chancellor of the Exchequer, Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, S.W. headed paper, one on 47 Duke Street, St James's, S.W. headed paper, between 27 April 1887 and 12 July 1895 (light browning).

The first thanking Holmes on behalf of Mr Goschen for his letter and assuring him that "the considerations advanced in it are of the highest possible importance". However, he explains that Goschen would not be able to speak of "its contents" in public as it "would involve references to the attitude of other members of the Cabinet, a subject on which his 'lips' are naturally closed." With corresponding envelopes.

With a further selection of autograph letters, most addressed to Holmes, from George Wyndham, J.H. Murray, Lord Welby and others; and a quantity of related ephemera. (a lot)
