LORD PALMERSTON, HENRY JOHN TEMPLE 3RD VISCOUNT (1784-1865)
Two autograph letters signed ("H. Palmerston") and ("Palmerston"), to Canning, together 5 pages, 8°, 22 May 1855 and July 10th.

The first volunteering Dr Waller Lewis for the appointment of Medical Inspector to the Post Office: "He is a very able and well informed man and has been much employed by the late Board of Health in Sanitary Investigations. I also employed him when I was at the Home Office, and last year when cholera prevailed I had him down at Broadlands" (reply recorded on back). The second regarding the promotion of Mr Thorn, "I am only sorry now that I troubled you - I was asked some months ago to apply to you in his favour - and I have no doubt that this was before the promotion which he has now received".
