The eldest son of Sir George Grenville and Elizabeth Wyndham, he succeeded his uncle Richard, 2nd Earl Temple, as 3rd Earl Temple, Viscount and Baron Cobham. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1790. He was M.P. for Bucks 1774-79; Lord Lieut. and Governor of Ireland 1782-87. He was one of the founders of the Order of St. Patrick by George III in 1783. On 4 December 1784 he was created 1st Marquis of Buckingham. He assumed the names of Nugent (on marriage) and Temple before Grenville and the arms of same in December 1779.
