GEORGE GRENVILLE NUGENT TEMPLE, 1ST MARQUIS OF BUCKINGHAM (1753-1813) Letters patent from George III advancing George Grenville Nugent Temple, Earl Temple to be Marquis of Buckingham, 4th December 1784, manuscript on vellum, illuminated borders of Royal Coats-of-Arms, 660 x 830mm. (26 x 32½in.), with seal (broken), in original gilt-embossed morocco case (worn). With 10 indentures from 1697 to 1765, relating to the above family, five of them between Henry Duke of Chandos and James Marquis of Carnarvan, the remainder between Bridges and Symes of Somerset. The eldest son of Sir George Grenville and Elizabeth Wyndham, he succeeded his uncle Richard, 2nd Earl Temple, as 3rd Earl Temple, Viscount and Baron Cobham. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1790. He was M.P. for Bucks 1774-79; Lord Lieut. and Governor of Ireland 1782-87. He was one of the founders of the Order of St. Patrick by George III in 1783. On 4 December 1784 he was created 1st Marquis of Buckingham. He assumed the names of Nugent (on marriage) and Temple before Grenville and the arms of same in December 1779.
