ANTHONY TROLLOPE (1815-1882)
Three autograph letters signed ("Yours very faithfully Anthony Trollope" and "Yours always Anthony Trollope") to Taylor (?Book Illustrators, sisters Jane or Anne Taylor), together 11 pages, 8°, two on Waltham House, Waltham Cross, headed paper and one on 193 Piccadilly London W. headed paper, 30 July 1864, 4 August 1864 and 31 October 1864 (some browning and spotting, mainly to the last letter). Trollope discusses the illustrations for an upcoming book.

The first reads: "I have just got a letter from Chapman (?editor) expressing very strong approval indeed of your drawing on wood". Discussing the issue of fees, he suggests: "Perhaps you could say what is your own idea about the price. My idea is always to get as much as I can".

The second praises the interpretation of particular characters: "That done on the wood of Lady ?Penura is excellent" but is less complimentary later complaining: "It annoys me to say to you what perhaps may be harmful, but Mr Chapman thinks, and I agree with him, that for a little time you had better do them yourself. Your sister's hand has not the confidence that yours has."

The third letter requests further alterations but sympathises: "It is a terrible bore for artists who illustrate that they should be forced to attend to ?humphey little things which are in themselves of no interest whatever. But I am sure you will agree with me that the descriptions as given by the illustrators and in the type must go hand in hand".

He concludes by enquiring: "Have you heard of the death of poor John Leech?" (3)
