Two Continental manuscript dials, (c.1800)
A cardboard dial applied with delicately and decoratively hand-painted paper in red, yellow, blue and orange, LONGITUDO LUNA, with instructions and labels in Latin, the smaller revolving disc with iron pointer and pin, graduated in days and months and with simple drawings for the houses of the Zodiac with corresponding symbols, the outer rim labelled with various years, the earliest being 1800, the larger disc labelled with the months and days 1-31 in a spiral, overlapping after 28 (some wear and loss of detail) -- 11.5in. (29.3cm.) diameter; and two dials on a rectangular cardboard base applied with two layers of delicately and decoratively hand-painted paper in red, yellow and blue, MACHINA COMETARIA, the text in Latin, a raised elipse in the upper part of the larger dial, labelled with various numbers and signs (incomplete, the upper layer of paper detached, some wear and loss of detail), with hinged fruitwood stand in cruciform shape, secured by hooks and eyes (some worming) -- 14½in. (37cm.) long
