Lot Essay

A rare and interesting Second World War period Columbus globe. Since the company's formation in 1909 by Paul Oestergaard, Columbus globes were not usually dated, the exception being those produced during the Second World War (cf. lot 35, Christie's sale 25 June 1997, a Columbus Erdglobus dated 20.1.43), which were updated to show the expansion of the Reich. The present example shows the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Poland as part of the DEUTSCHES REICH. It is also interesting to note the construction of the globe - there are no polar calottes, the half meridian ring is made from an alloy and the stand itself is bakelite, all symptomatic of production methods modified to suit the scarcities of a war-time economy.
