THE FRANKLIN TERRESTRIAL GLOBE 10" IN DIAMETER CONTAINING ALL THE Geographical Divisions & POLITICAL BOUNDARIES to the present date carefully compiled from the best Authorities MOORE & NIMS TROY N.Y. [c.1865]
A 10-inch (25.4cm.) diameter terrestrial globe made up of twelve delicately hand-coloured engraved gores, the equator graduated in degrees and hours, the ecliptic graduated in days and showing symbols for the houses of the Zodiac, the Meridian of Greenwich ungraduated, the oceans with an IMPROVED ANALEMMA and showing the tracks of various voyages, including those of Cook, Columbus, Wilkes and the Mayflower, variously labelled with historical and geographical notes such as The Pacific Ocean was discovered by Balboa in 1513 First navigated by Magellan in 1520 It extends from North to South 7500 miles and from East to West 10 000 miles, steamship routes from New York to Aspinwall and Aspinwall to San Francisco shown, a Submerged Telegraph Cable shown in the northern Atlantic Ocean, the continents with some nation states outlined or shaded in green and showing cities, rivers and mountain ranges, little Antarctic coastline shown, Tasmania labelled Van Diemans Land, Alaska labelled RUSSIAN AMERICA, New Zealand labelled ULSTER ISLAND, MUNSTER ISLAND and LEINSTER ISLAND, the North Pole with printed hour circle numbered I-XII twice anti-clockwise (some old abrasions, neat repairs), the brass meridian circle engraved on one side and divided in four quadrants, the papered horizon ring graduated in degrees clockwise and anti-clockwise, days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, showing compass directions, months and symbols, pictures and names for the houses of the Zodiac, on four baluster turned fruitwood legs united by cross stretchers -- 13¼in.
