Lot Essay

The art of inlaying semi-precious hardstones into marble is particularly associated with Florence, where the Opificio delle Pietre Dure was established in 1588, reviving an ancient craft. By the end of the 19th century a wide variety of accessories were available in the city with pietre dure decoration, from table tops to paperweights and small boxes.
It is likely that the present clock was bought from a French manufacturer and then furnished with side panels suited to appeal to the local market for souvenirs of the Grand Tour. Indeed, the presentation inscription suggests that it may have been a souvenir in the truest sense.
