The daguerreotype shows the Firefly class (later Priam class) locomotive built by Nasmyth, Gaskell and Co., Manchester, build no. 36, which was brought into service in March 1842 and continued until scrapped in July 1870. It is likely that the photograph was taken when the locomotive was inaugurated in 1842. The image, which is laterally reversed, includes four or possibly five figures, two of which are gentlemen wearing top hats.
