Lot Essay

The view of the gateway at Linlithgow Palace includes a guard in uniform and two seated female 'ghosts' in front of the gate. The study on the steps at York Minster shows thirteen men. The picture was made in September or October 1844, when the men were attending the meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
