Lot Essay

A fine portrait of the palaeontologist in academic robes with an animal skull. This was the first portrait issued in this series, which also includes a portrait of Stanfield. This print may have been sent to Stanfield as a sample to help persuade him to sit, which he did on 25 August 1857. Some of his family, certainly his wife and daughter, Harriet, were also photographed by them.
