The initials on the cover correspond with those of Robert Robinson (& Son) whose advertising label Horticultural Builders Canonmills Edinburgh accompanies a small photograph of the builder's premises in the album. It seems likely that the majority of photographs, which appear to be the work of an amateur, are by Robinson, who probably also compiled the album. The majority of subjects are pictorial rural or farmyard scenes including many of animals and mostly taken in the areas around Edinburgh such as Granton, Currie, Duddingston, Longniddry, Dalmeny, Cramond and the Pentlands. Other images also likely to be by Robinson are views of Edinburgh, Norfolk and Wales, a few portraits, a photograph of a parrot and flower still life subjects. Also including approx. thirty views in Canada, of which eleven are professional views in and around Victoria, B.C. (approx. 10 x 8 in.), three are portraits of native Americans and two are views titled 'Chinatown'.
