Lot Essay

Views, architectural studies and portraits including a panoramic view of Bombay from Malibar Hill, the Parsee Tower of Silence, Bombay; the Elephanta Caves; temple studies around Tanjore, Madura and Agra including the Taj Mahal; views around Calcutta, Madras, Darjeeling, Benares and Delhi; and a portrait of a Tamil woman.

John P. Nicholas was a commercial photographer who operated from Mount Toad, Madras c.1858-c.1905, although he actually left Madras c.1895. He entered into partnership as Nicholas and Curths c. 1869-73 and set up branches at Bangalore c.1872-73 and Ootacamund c.1868-75.
