A Rare German Backsword
Circa 1540
With straight single-edged blade with long back-edge towards the point and triple fullers bordering the back, struck on one face with a 'twig' mark, the iron guard comprising straight slender quillons with writhen knob terminals and side-shell formed as a fire-steel pierced with a central cross between two hearts and with roped edge and scroll-shaped terminals at each end, crutch-shaped bone pommel (cracked) carved with a female figure dressed in the style of circa 1540 and a cherub's head, and wooden grip covered with fish-skin
