A Fine Dress Sabre
French or German, probably for the Turkish market, early 19th Century
With strongly curved hollow-ground watered blade, back-edged towards the point, the forte etched with heavily gilt trophies of arms, banners and laurel branches against a blued ground with the signature 'P.G. Knecht Fils' and ' Solingen' near the guard, the 'Mameluke' hilt of heavily gilt copper alloy with long slightly recurved quillons with rounded ends, and pistol grip, and set throughout with paste brilliants and other stones forming conventional scrolls, sprays of foliage and crescents, in original red leather-covered scabbard with chape and two lockets, the latter carrying suspension-rings, decorated en suite with the hilt
