A Rare German Pavise
15th Century
Of wood, of characteristic rectangular shape with raised central band of semi-circular section, covered with linen faced with gesso (damaged at the bottom), painted on the front with the arms of the City of Konstanz, argent, a cross sable, with a broad red band across the top, it and the cross containing foliated scrollwork (some repainting throughout), the interior retaining the original iron staples for hand-grips
