Lot Essay

Eclipse, by Marske out of Spiletta, was bred by William, Duke of Cumberland in 1764. Eclipse retired to stud in 1760 unbeaten in 16 races. His brilliance as a racehorse was surpassed by his influence as a stallion. Some ninety per cent of all racehorses descend from him.
