A collection of correspondence from Dame Nellie Melba to a close friend, Lady Susan Fitz-Clarence, circa 1909-1917 including twenty-four autograph letters, signed, various examples include:
- an autograph letter, signed, [n.d. but circa 1908] telling Susan ...I have so many triumphs & so little happiness - I am sick to death of it all... 4pp;
- an autograph letter, signed on Hotel Somerset, Boston headed paper [n.d. but circa 1908] stating ...My success is colossal - the last time I sang at the opera thousands were turned away & the crowd broke down barriers and a solid staircase & jumped the seats. The police had to be sent for... 4pp;
- another autograph letter, signed on Flete, Malvern headed paper [n.d.] telling Susan...I have had 2 proposals of marriage & am considering both, one of my wooers weighs 19 stone but has £10000 a year - ha! 4pp;
- another autograph letter, signed on Grand Hotel, Wellington, New Zealand headed paper, [n.d.] commiserating on the death of her friend's father and telling her ...I shan't bother you with my troubles. I seem to have nothing to live for... 2pp;
