Isabel Mateos of the Instituto de Investigaciones Scientificas de Medinacelli, Madrid, believes the present picture to be by a painter from the Valencian School working around 1500. She points out similarities in the depiction of the figure of Christ with those by Rodrigo de Osuna the Elder and compares the angel with colourful wings to works by the Master of Cativa.
