Lot Essay

Direct comparisons can be made between this picture and a documented cycle of forty canvases by Ragolia in the ceiling of the church of Sant' Antonio at Polla (Salerno), datable to circa 1666. In particular, the angels' faces on the right of Saint Francis with Angels demonstrate a direct link with Eve's face in the present picture (see V. de Martini, catalogue of the exhibition Michele Ragolia 'siculus' et 'panormitanus', 'Il Cilento ritovato, La produzione artistica dell'antica Diocesi di Capaccio, Padula (Salerno), July-Oct. 1990, pp.162-165, nos.43-44).
