An extensive landscape with a monastery above a river

The present picture can be related to a Landscape with a Bridge, also signed and dated 1632, which was with Dr. C. Benedict, Paris, 1951 (J. Hayes, 'Claude de Jong', Burlington Magazine, XCVIII, January 1956, pp.3-11, fig. 12). Although de Jongh was painting in Utrecht or Haarlem in the early 1630's, he is known to have referred to his drawings executed in England on various successive visits between 1615 and 1628. While his topographical views of London are well documented, he also returned to Saint Augustine's Monastery, Canterbury on subsequent visits (op. cit. fig. 8) and there are three drawings of other picturesque monastic ruins in the British Museum. It is therefore possible that the present picture is an English view.
