An 18th-Century brass Butterfield compass sundial,
signed on the horizontal plate Butterfield a Paris, further engraved with hour-scales for latitudes 46°, 49° and 52°, the compass with plain needle with jewelled cap, the folding gnomon with bird support, the underside of the plate and compass box engraved with the latitudes of sixteen continental cities and towns -- 2¾in. (7cm.) long
