An 18th-Century Culpeper-pattern compound monocular microscope,
unsigned, with lignum vitae upper and lower body section, lens carrier and base, the green-stained vellum inner body-tube with gilt embossed decoration and graduations for use with the four objectives, the lower plate of the body-tube secured to the stage by three baluster-turned supports secured by three original square nuts, incorporating the sprung slide holder and slide catch to secure accessories, the lower section united with the turned base by three angled baluster-turned brass supports, with swivel mirror, with a quantity of accessories including the four objectives (one bead missing), a pair of specimen forceps with probe, a quantity of ivory sliders, some with original specimens, and other items, contained in a pyramid-shaped oak case, the plinth base containing two drawers for the accessories, with original iron-framed lock, suspension loop, key escutcheon and key -- 20in. (50.8cm.) high
