It is thought that construction of this engine was started about 1870 by two engineers, Houghton & Day, and finished about fifty years ago.

An unusual, finely engineered model of a three oscillating cylinder radial steam engine,
with double acting cylinders ¾in. bore x 2in. stroke mounted at 120° to one another on a hexagonal pierced frame, the piston rods with a common crosshead on a counterbalanced crank, the crankshaft running in three main bearings the outboard on tapered columns with direct coupled Watt-type governor with geared floor-mounted linkage and butterfly valve. Further details include inlet manifold with regulator valve, centrally mounted steam chest with equal length distribution pipes, castle nuts, studded stuffing boxes and other details, unpainted and polished, brass base plate on three turned feet (restored) -- 11½ x 10½in. (29.2 x 26.7cm.).
