A rare dated wheel-cutting engine,
signed John Tipping, Whildon Green 1751, with thirty-four rows of divisions on the brass plate, iron and brass spring-loaded mechanism with ivory-knobbed crank, polygonal iron-knopped lever and vice-grip under bed - 22in (56cm) wide overall.

Lot Essay

Possibly the earliest dated example of a Lancashire wheel engine. The whereabouts of Whildon Green is not known, but a Thomas Tipping is recorded as a watchmaker in Liverpool from the 1740s until his death in 1764.
