A provincial Italian carved, painted and gilded tabernacle frame, 16th Century,
the cresting with scrolled volutes flanking a central cartouche depicting a bird, the cartouche also surrounded by scrolling; the frieze with a winged cherub mask flanked by scrolling foliage and with grotesque human masks; dentilled entablature; the sides of the frame with Ionic capitals supported by caryatids on pedestals; the outside edges of the sides with further grotesque masks and scrolling; the predella with Egyptian-style masks to each side and the centre, with further scrolling foliate motifs between; reverse ovolo with egg-and-dart course; beading to the sight edge -- 19 1/4 x 15 in. (48.9 x 38.1 cm.)
