Lot Essay

Bred by Sir William Ramsden, Basto was by The Byerley Turk out of Bay Peg by The Leedes Arabian. Acquired by the Duke of Devonshire, he won a number of races at Newmarket between 1708 and 1710 beating Squirrel, Billy, Chance, Tantivy, and Brisk. He had a very successful career at stud siring numerous winners such as Old Croquette, Soreheels, Little Scar, Black-eyed Susan, Dimple, and Brown Betty.
