Lot Essay
There are two paintings, one by Tillemans and one by Wootton, in the Paul Mellon Collection which depict a similar scene (J. Egerton, British Sporting and Animal Paintings: The Paul Mellon Collection, New Haven, 1978, pp. 17-8, no. 17 and pp. 31-2, no. 33). As in other early Newmarket scenes (see lot 5), important individuals may be depicted, in particluar, the large figure on the left in the tan coat is probably Tregonwell Frampton and the figure on the grey horse in the center may be the King George I or another prominent racing figure. It has also been suggested that the bay horse with the jockey in blue may be the Duke of Devonshire's Flying Childers (see lots 3 and 12) and the grey horse may belong to the Duke of Wharton.
There are also several paintings of similar oblong shape and size from this period including those recorded at Knowsley Hall in 1736 (W. S. Sparrow, British Sporting Artists, London, 1922, p. 61).
