Lot Essay

Owned by the Hon. Edward Petre, The Colonel was by Whisker out of My Lady's Dam. In 1827, he won three races including the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. In the run-off for the 1828 Derby The Colonel led most of the way, but was beaten by a short neck by the Duke of Rutland's Cadland. He went on to win the 1828 St. Leger and was purchased by His Majesty King George IV for 4,000 for whom he won several races. The Colonel was retired to stud at Hampton Court.
