Lot Essay
The race depicting is the Great Subscription Purse at York where Lord Kelburne's Actaeon ridden by Harry Edwards beat Lord Darlington's Memnon ridden by Sam Chifney by a head. There is a painting of this race by John Frederick Herring, Sr. (sold, Christie's London, 25 April 1985, lot 15).
Actaeon by Scud out of Diana was bred by R. Milnes. He was unplaced in the 1825 Derby and St. Leger (won by Memnon). He was sold to Lord Kelburne (later Earl of Glasgow) for whom he won the race depicted in 1826. He also won the 1827 Doncaster Stakes, the King's Guineas at Caledonian Hunt, the Gold Cup at Richmond, and was second in the 1828 Gold Cup at Newcastle. In 1829 he was fourth in the York Cup won by Velocipede (see lot 30).
Bred and owned by Richard Watt, Memnon was by Whisker out of Manuella. He won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster in 1824 and both the York and Doncaster St. Legers in 1825. He was sold to Lord Darlington for whom he won several races including the 1827 Ascot Gold Cup.
