Bred by Mr. William Allen, Rockingham was by Humphrey Clinker out of Medora. He was purchased as a yearling by H. Vansittart and then at two purchased for 1,000 guineas by Mr. Richard Watt for whom he won several races including the 1833 St. Leger ridden by Sam Darling and the Doncaster Gold Cup. He was sold to Mr. John Theobald for whom he won numerous races inlduing the 1834 King's Plate at Newmarket, the Cup at Brighton, and was second in the Ascot Gold Cup (won by Lord Chesterfield's Glaucus). In 1835, he won the Goodwood Cup beating Glaucus and St. Giles (see lot 31) and in 1836, he ran second in the Cup at Ascot and won the Cup at Brighton before being retired to stud.
