Bred by Lord Chesterfield, Crucifix by Priam (see lot 27) out of Octaviana was purchased with her dam for 60 from Lord Chesterfield's dispersal sale by Lord George Bentinck. Undefeated, in 1840 she won the One Thousand Guineas and the Two Thousand Guineas within three days. In the Oaks, she was injured before the race which had numerous false starts, yet still won anyway and was retired to stud undefeated. She was the dam of Surplice (by Touchstone) winner of the Derby and St. Leger in 1848.
