Lot Essay

Bred by Robert Stephenson, Volitgeur by Voltaire out of Martha Lynn by Mulatto was purchased by Lord Zetland for 1,000. He won both the Derby and St. Leger in 1850. He also won the Doncaster Gold Cup beating the undefeated The Flying Dutchman (winner of both the Derby and St. Leger in 1849). The order was reversed the following year when the two met in their famous Match at York.
