This is one of a large number of equine portraits which Viscount Chaplin (1840-1923) commissioned from Robert Nightingale. In addition to being a great patron of the Turf and owner of the 1867 Derby winner and important sire Hermit, Henry Chaplin inherited Lord Henry Bentinck's hounds and hunted the Burton Country six days a week from 1865 to 1871. He is considered to be one of the greatest breeders of foxhounds in the 19th century as well as being an influential Cabinet Minister.
