Bred in Ireland, Caurouch by Irish Birdcatcher out of a Regulator mare won three Queen's Plates in Ireland before being sent to race in England in 1847. After a poor race at Manchester, he won the Cesarewitch at Newmarket October Meeting with odds of 30 to 1. This painting may have been commissioned by Mr. O'Neill to commemorate his this victory.
