Jan Frans van Dael studied architecture at the Academy in Antwerp before leaving for Paris in 1786 to undertake the decoration at the Chteaux of Saint Cloud, Bellevue and Chantilly. In 1793 he was appointed official painter to the Court and was granted residence in the Louvre. The Empress Josphine, Maire-Louise and Louis XVIII were his greatest patrons and each owned several of his canvases. A frequent exhibitor in the Paris Salon, he was later made a member of the Lgion d'Honneur in 1825.
