Lot Essay
No other tripod jar of this unusually large size, and only two others with ribbing appear to be published, see the Exhibition of the Arts of the T'ang Dynasty, Indianapolis Museum of Art, 1973, Catalogue, no. 47, and the example, on four legs offered by Sotheby's, London, December 14, 1982, lot 96.
Plain examples without ribbing are well-recorded but seldom on the scale of the present lot. For other examples, see Oriental Ceramics, Kodansha, Japan, 1981, vol. 5, col. pl. 11, from the British Museum, London; and Sekai toji zenshu, Shogakukan, Japan, 1976, vol. 11, p. 243, no. 203.
The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. C298b56 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
