From 1874-1875 Stevens painted the Series of the Four Seasons for the King of Belgium. In working on this series, he painted several variants in which one can see him modifying specific details such as the design of the dresses used to portray the seasons. Two other complete versions of the four seasons exist: one in the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and the other in a Private Collection in Stockholm. The Johnson Collection in Philadelphia has a single panel depicting Autumn, and there is a watercolor of Summer in the Art Institute of Chicago.
