The figures seen in this drawing are closely related to those in three pastels executed in 1888 (Lemoisne, nos. 942-945). This drawing is probably done early in this sequence; the artist analyzes the anatomy of the figures, who are partially stripped of their skirts, which are fully rendered in the pastels. This pairing of dancers constitutes a successful merging of two opposing figures: the upturned arm of the left-hand dancer is mirrored and inverted in the downturned arm of the right-hand figure; the faces and legs also form a visually pleasing counterpoint. This pairing reappears in Lemoisne, no. 1066 (1890-1895), no. 1223 (1895-1900) and no. 1332 (1898). The dancers also feature individually in Lemoisne, nos. 1224 and 1225 (1895-1900).
