Camille Pissarro traveled from his native island of St. Thomas and arrived in Venezuela in 1852. During the two years he stayed in Venezuela, he produced many paintings and drawings, mostly landscapes and seascapes, as well as views of the city of Caracas.

This drawing is similar to another found in the collection of the Fundacin Boulton in Caracas, also depicting the Iglesia de la Pastora, which is located in the historic center of the city.
