SAMS, William, publisher. A Tour Through Paris, illustrated with twenty-one coloured plates. London: William Sams, [ca. 1825].
Large 4o (357 x 263 mm). 21 hand-colored aquatint plates. (Slightly browned, some minor finger-soiling). Contemporary red half morocco, spine gilt, edges gilt (rebacked preserving original backstrip, minor scuffing, corners slightly worn).
Third edition. This edition, the first not in oblong format, is identified by the order of the plates, here in reverse (see Abbey Travel for a detailed description). "This edition is often cited as 1822-24, but, apart from a study of watermarks in a large number of copies, there seems to be no way of dating it ... watermarks as late as 1833 are known" (Abbey 113). In the present copy, some plates bear watermarks dated 1825; the watermark of the last plate, "Promenade of her Serene Highness the Duchess of Berri," is dated 1824 as in the first edition (1824, oblong 4o). The plates include "Dancers on Stilts", "Interior of a Swimming Pool", "La Morgue" and "Porters and Fisherwomen Revelling around the Statue of Henri IV". Lipperheide Fd 19; Abbey, Travel, 114 and cf. 113.
