Adams," and with a second inscription (in an unknown hand) on upper board: "J.Q. Adams to J. Adams." A pleasing association copy, presented to the elderly John Adams only four years before his death, by his son, at the time serving as Secretary of State in James Monroe's administration. Three years later, John Quincy Adams was nominated for President.
