STOCKTON, Richard, Signer (New Jersey). Autograph letter signed ("Richd Stockton") to William Kelly, Princeton, 14 March 1768. 3 full pages, 4to, 224 x 181 (8.13/16 x 76in.). In very fine condition.
A relatively scarce full autograph letter of interesting legal content. As attorney for Lord Perth, Stockton writes: "I cannot see any sufficient reason to allow my opinion as to the Mandamas. The Surveyor Genl. of New Jersey is, I consider, a person sufficiently known by the law of N. Jersey to be called upon by a Mandamus - the Sup. Court of King's Bench here, has as much power within the Province, as the Court of King's Bench at Westminster over England: and therefore every argument used in the one case will apply in the other. It is a writ executive of publick justice, and the subject is in no danger from its being freely used. I am nevertheless not so fond of my own opinion as not to submit it with pleasure. Whatever my Lord Perth's Agents, and his other Council shall determine as most expedient; I shall acquiese in, and cooperate as fully as in my power...."
