ILLUSTRATED WITH THE FIRST PRINTED IMAGE OF SANTA CLAUS GOING DOWN A CHIMNEY. The large engraving at the head of page [1] depicts St. Nick on a rooftop with a bagfull of toys about to descend a chimney with his sleigh and reindeer in the background. The caption above reads: "St. Nicholas, on his New-Year's Eve Excursion, (As Ingham Saw Him,) in the Act of Descending a Chimney." The explanation for the illustration reads: "In this number of the Mirror we had intended giving a Steel Plate engraving of Weir's celebrated painting of St. Nicholas, but were disappointed by the artist, and in consequence have substituted the Ruins of Carthage as this month's picture [not present]; but, not being perfectly satisfied under disappointment, and having a very great reverence for the good old Saint who so often made our hearts jump with joy when we were boys, we prevailed upon our friend Ingham too give us a sketch of him, just as he saw him one bright, frosty, moonlight night, as he was returning home late from a party of friends." On page 7 this issue of the Mirror contains a version of Clement C. Moore's "'Twas the night before New-Year [sic]..."
