Lot Essay

The applied gold and copper paulownia leaves and blossoms on the bases of these candlesticks were undoubtedly inspired by the Japanese Imperial crest, which incorporated this plant. The Japanese reverence for the paulownia in this period was reinforced by the establishment of the Order of the Paulownia Sun in 1888 by Emperor Meiji.
